VanJee Technology's 128-line vehicle-mounted LiDAR successfully passed the severe cold winter environment test

Mar 22,2023

Recently, VanJee Technology's 128-line LiDAR WLR-739 successfully passed the extreme cold test in Mohe, Heilongjiang province, China. This winter test mainly verifies the WLR-739’s ranging accuracy, high cold durability, and anti-interference performance in extremely cold environments.

The lowest winter temperature in Mohe area is close to minus 40°C. In order to verify the performance of WLR-739 in the complex and changeable geographical climate to the greatest extent, VanJee Technology WLR-739 has conducted 17 high-intensity and high-standard extreme cold tests to ensure product reliability.

Excellent overall performance

The extremely cold temperature will challenge the performance of the LiDAR, and the snow and sediment in winter will interfere with the reflected laser light of the LiDAR, resulting in noise in the point cloud and affecting the quality of the point cloud.

Test scenario

After five days of testing in Mohe, the test results proved that the comprehensive performance of WLR-739 was outstanding, and all the test items passed the test.

Under the working condition of -40°C, the performance of WLR-739 extreme ranging is stable, and the stability reaches 180m@10%.

Demonstration of target recognition ability

Environmental awareness is the key to the interaction between unmanned vehicles and external environmental information. When LiDAR scans low-reflectivity targets, the detection effect of LiDAR will be affected by the surface material and shape of the target, resulting in missed detection and other problems.

Loading test

In order to verify the detection ability of WLR-739 when encountering low-reflectivity targets in low-temperature realistic scenario, VanJee Technology took black-clothed figures, cone barrels, black cars, vertical tires, and horizontal tires as targets, and assembled the products car test.

The WLR-739 laser radar loaded on the car was arranged in groups according to the distance of the arithmetic sequence between the test targets and the recognition effect and recognition distance test of the targets. The test results all meet the standard, which confirms the WLR-739’s environmental perception and environmental adaptation capabilities, and that it can still simulate human’s natural perception well in an extremely cold working environment, ensuring the safety and real-time performance of unmanned driving.

Excellent point cloud effect

The WLR-739 loading test also includes the environment (snow, ice, street signs, railings, light poles, trees, lane lines, etc.), vehicles (cut in, cut out, oncoming vehicles, etc.), pedestrians, daytime, road test in the dark etc. Under extremely cold conditions, WLR-739 can still output robust and reliable point cloud data in real traffic scenes and on bumpy roads.

Extreme cold test site

Challenging the limit and crossing the extreme cold stems from VanJee Technology's pursuit of high quality WLR-739. Various test results demonstrate the high reliability and high stability of WLR-739 under extreme conditions, which is more conducive to improving the safety of driverless cars and further empowering driverless vehicles.
